Witchhazel is one of the first flowering shrubs or small trees to bloom in spring in Maine. This one was photographed in April in Phippsburg, In Maine, common witchhazel is often found growing beneath the shade of beech and birch trees, keeping company with beaked filbert (Corylus cornuta) and an occasional native honeysuckle (Lonicera canadensis), and surrounded by colonies of maple-leaf viburnum (Viburnum acerifolium). It is intolerant of flooding and prefers drier sites.
