My husband had set a Havahart trap in our yard in the hopes of capturing for relocation as very large, Gray squirrel. Instead, he awoke to find this young Striped Skunk in the cage. More accurately, our dog found it first. We will be smelling skunk defense spray for a long time to come! Serves us right, I suppose. :)

Door with fan detail, Friendship, Maine. This door has perfect proportions to my eye. The door is narrow, but has weight because of the side panels which are fitted to the width of the fan. The fan has fine fanning detail which compliment the delicate width of the door. The windows in the door top mimic the arch of the fan and draw the eye upward even more toward the fan. I don't know when this was built, but I'll guess very early 1800s.

Surf Scoters are also called Skunkheads from the white stripe down the back of their heads and necks. Here, a pod of drakes is squiring around a single hen on the left. Phippsburg Maine, Totman Cove. These birds are most often seen in the fall, winter and spring months along the coast.

Yellow Billed Loon, Gavia adamsii is also know as the White-billed Diver. It's the largest member of the loon family. It breeds in the Arctic and winters mainly at sea along the coasts of the northern Pacific Ocean and northwestern Norway; it also sometimes overwinters on large inland lakes. This one was on Casco Bay, Maine near Portland, October 29, 2010. This is a very rare bird to see in Maine.
