  • Surf Scoters are also called Skunkheads from the white stripe down the back of their heads and necks. Here, a pod of drakes is squiring around a single hen on the left. Phippsburg Maine, Totman Cove. These birds are most often seen in the fall, winter and spring months along the coast.
  • Belted Kingfishers, male top, female bottom. Note that the male does not have a russet breast where the female does. The way I remember which is which is that I think of the female as wearing a dirty apron. These birds are mostly migratory in Maine, though a few hang around for the winter along the coast where there is open water for fishing. Phippsburg Maine.

  • Yellow Billed Loon, Gavia adamsii is also know as the White-billed Diver. It's the largest member of the loon family. It breeds in the Arctic and winters mainly at sea along the coasts of the northern Pacific Ocean and northwestern Norway; it also sometimes overwinters on large inland lakes. This one was on Casco Bay, Maine near Portland, October 29, 2010. This is a very rare bird to see in Maine.
