Black Vulture in flight. The more southern of our two common vulture species, the Black Vulture flaps its wings rather frequently while it soars. It is more social than the Turkey Vulture, often traveling in large flocks. This is the most abundant vulture in the Western Hemisphere, and populations seem to be steady or rising in North America. Black Vultures are spotted more and more frequently in Maine. As large birds, they were susceptible to egg thinning from DDT, like Ospreys and eagles. Because they eat carion, they are also susceptible to lead poisoning from lead shot.
Wood Stork in flight, south Florida, The Everglades National Park. Wood Storks are endangered due to habitat loss. It was a life bird for me.
Swallowtail Kite in flight, south Florida, March 2013, a life bird for me.
