  • Northern Shrike, photo taken through living room windows. Bird perched on tip of balsam tree. This is the third shrike I have seen at my bird feeders this winter. • Maui seems nearly over run with House sparrows, Passer domesticus. They are living in every possible nook and cranny. The first introduction to North America occurred when birds from England were released in New York City, in 1852. it is one of the most abundant birds in North America. The House Sparrow was first introduced to Australia in 1863 then in New Zealand in 1859, and from there reached many of the Pacific islands, including Hawaii.
