  • Broad-winged hawks, Buteo platypterus , mated pair, the one on the right has a Chipmunk for its dinner, May 2013, Phippsburg, Maine. These birds have a nest near this perch. They were making a lot of noise crying and calling out to each other about this catch.

  • This is a mated Osprey pair. The male is on the lower left branch, the female on the upper right. This illustrates (hopefully) that the female is slightly larger than the male and also the difference in plumage. The female has a marked breast, where the male has a plain white breast. The female looks as if she is wearing a dirty apron. That is how I remember which is which.. Pandion haliaetus, Osprey, also called a Fish Hawk, is a migratory raptor in Maine

  • American Kestrel, our smallest raptor. They are plentiful in Maine but are migratory. They are plentiful in Florida, too.
  • Red-shouldered Hawk, Buteo lineatus photographed in The Everglades National Park, Flamingo. Red-shouldered hawks are not rare in Maine, though uncommon. They are a migratory raptor in Maine. The south Florida variety is a slightly paler version of those seen in Maine in summer.
