Northern Hawk Owls are seen as rare, winter visitors to Maine. They are birds from the boreal forest near the arctic circle. This bird was photographed in January of 2009 in Bristol, Maine. That same year, there were large numbers of White-winged Crossbills reported, also birds from the boreal forest. In this image, the owl has captured a crossbill to eat.
