BIRDS THAT WADE

Wading birds that a feed on shorelines are migratory in Maine. It is rare to see a wading bird in Maine in the winter. They are dependent on open water for fishing of crabs, mollusks and fish. Herons will capture frogs and snakes in fields, which are not available in the winter, either. Great and Snowy egrets were once endangered. Their plumage was highly sought after for making ladies' hats. They are now protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act; their populations have successfully rebounded.

  • Roseate Spoonsbills, Snowy Egrets, Great Egrets, Wood Storks, White Ibis and Great White Herons feeding. March, 2013, The Everglades National Park, south Florida. This flock of wading birds were feeding in a drainage canal on Route 41, also known as Alligator Alley. They were some of the first birds I saw in Florida. It was so spectacular that I found it almost overwhelming.

  • These are baby Green Herons. They were photographed in the wild but as you can see, they were standing on a rusted culvert. They were so comical I could hardly tear myself away from them! Baby birds are usually so homely, like these, that they are really cute!

  • Yellow Crowned Night Heron perched in a tree in the swamps of the Everglades in South Florida. Though this bird was photographed in south Florida, we do have them in Maine on rare occassions. One has been reported in Sagadahoc County and several in Scarborough Marsh in southern Maine.
