The Great Golden Digger Wasp, Sphex ichneumoneus is a large, orange and black wasp in the family of digger wasps. They are predators that sting and paralize thier prey, mostly other insects. This hydrangea was covered with them. They are fast moving and wary of anything big enough to prey on them: namely people. This made them hard to photograph as they don't stay in place for long.
