Quaking aspen trunks at Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island, Maine in September, study in black and white. These are Populus tremuloides, or "Quaking Aspens" just like the aspens that make Aspen, Colorado so gold and lovely in September. Though they look like individual trees, they are actually a colony which grows from a connected root system. Some aspen colonies are regarded as the larges living thing on earth!
