  • Bath, Maine, small flock of Wood Ducks. There were five ducks in this little migratory flock, one hen and four drakes. I found them in a tiny spot of pond in a cemetery. I visit the pond off and on while there is open water. It is less than two feet deep, so it freezes early and thaws late. I have photographed turtles, ducks and muskrats in the pond many times. Today, I saw the first of the season turtles and a muskrat. In addtion were these Wood Ducks, also first of season finds. I don't always see Wood Ducks in there, and never more than one. This was a real treat.

  • The pair of Bald eagles was sitting on an ice flow on Winnegance Bay as seen from Phippsburg in March. This is a mate pair, male and female, that have a nest nearby. Do you suppose those American Black ducks so busily foraging in the mud realize that they could instantly become eagle lunch at any second? That's the Doubling Point Lighthouse in the back ground in Arrowsic.

  • For a list of protected and endangered wildflowers in Maine see <a href="http://plants.usda.gov/java/threat">http://plants.usda.gov/java/threat</a> Wildflowers should be left undisturbed where they are found. To uproot and attempt to transplant them puts the species at risk. Wildflowers are dependent on very specific soil, water and light requirements which a home gardener can rarely reproduce.
