These rigs were kick scooters or a sort of 'skate.' They were worn on the foot and strapped to the leg just below the knee. They were a very early verion of a sort of inline skate dating from the early 1800s. I photographed them in Key West, Florida at the Audubon House and Garden museum. I'm sure that for the few times they were made to operate, they were a load of fun. But talk about leg breaking deadly!
